There are also seemingly small differences\u2014like size, orientation, and chamber type\u2014that can have a big impact on your lab&#8217;s operations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How do you determine which is right for your lab?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is a really interesting article giving <a href=\"http:\/\/lab-brief.co.uk\/newsletters\/apr19\/6.html%20\">a brief overview of the autoclave procurement process at Imperial College, London<\/a> (who recently needed to replace 10 aging autoclaves in their research labs).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A hidden gem is this brief observation about autoclave energy consumption:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;[a paper] given by Agilent \u2026 provided an analysis of the energy advantages of using autoclaves with round chambers. John Jerger\u2019s presentation indicated a 60% lower energy demand by round chambered autoclaves with a consequent comparative annual running cost of \u00a34560 [~$5,900] for a round 430L chamber compared to \u00a38400 [~$10,900] for a 450L square chamber&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Our first whitepaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Is-it-Hip-to-be-Square.pdf\">released back in 2016<\/a>, spoke to the fundamental design issues that guarantee a rectangular-chambered autoclave must use more power than a comparable cylindrical-chambered unit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nice to see more real-world numbers backing that up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We&#8217;ve spoken to similar issues with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Is-Your-Autoclave-Bleeding-You-Dry.pdf\">autoclave water consumption<\/a>\u2014and assisted the University of California, Riverside in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/2016\/08\/25\/autoclave-need-check-trade\/\">their own analysis of autoclave efficiency<\/a> (<b><i>SPOILER ALERT<\/i><\/b>: cylindrical chambers came out ahead then, too).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are so many types of autoclaves \u2014 not just in terms of autoclave processes (dry heat, steam, etc.).
