{"id":3222,"date":"2022-04-20T12:45:23","date_gmt":"2022-04-20T12:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/?p=3222"},"modified":"2022-04-04T22:53:01","modified_gmt":"2022-04-04T22:53:01","slug":"now-is-not-the-time-to-waste-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/2022\/04\/20\/now-is-not-the-time-to-waste-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Now Is Not the Time to Waste Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These last 22-years have been the driest since the year 800, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2022\/02\/14\/southwest-megadrought-worst-1200-years\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to a new study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Not only that, but \u201cthe 21st century has been substantially drier than the previous five decades, with 8.3 percent less precipitation, and nearly 1 degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) warmer than the period from 1950 to 1999.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Translation? The more arid it gets, the more arid it will get.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So this is clearly no time to be wasting water. Yet even with so many hours of research devoted to trying to turn back the tide of the climate crisis, North American research labs are often hugely wasteful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doing the Right Research with the Wrong Autoclave<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Labs generally consume a lot of resources. A good deal of \u201csustainability research\u201d is still done in labs that are not yet operating sustainably. According to most estimates, a research lab\u2019s energy consumption is 3 to 10 times greater than that of similarly sized office spaces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One way research labs often unnecessarily contribute to their waste (and global climate change) is by choosing jacketed autoclaves when they don\u2019t need them. Jacketed autoclaves use enormous amounts of water in order to provide features few labs need or want.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stanford University\u2019s 2015 energy audit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainable.stanford.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/resource-attachments\/Plug%20Load%20White%20Paper%20FINAL.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">showed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> lab equipment consuming more energy than all equipment types on campus combined. 167 jacketed autoclaves used about the same amount of energy as almost 20,000 computer monitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The University of California at Riverside found that jacketed autoclaves in their research labs consumed 5 to 6 times more water than expected\u2014even when the machines weren\u2019t in use! In one case of a particularly bad purpose-design fit, a properly functioning jacketed autoclave that was idle for 39-days used 16,000 gallons of water, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/LabDesign_Dec2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">just sitting there.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Given the gravity of the research goals and the dwindling resources available to address them, if you haven\u2019t yet, it\u2019s time to ask yourself if your lab <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> needs a jacketed model\u2014or if an unjacketed autoclave might do the same important work with less waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does Your Research Lab Really Need a Jacketed Lab Autoclave?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/jacketed-or-non-jacketed-autoclave\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Probably not<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. You might need to consider a jacketed lab autoclave if you need a high throughput machine that will operate continuously, 24\/7\/365. These machines are necessary in hospitals or pharmaceutical industry labs, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/autoclave-customers\/autoclaves-lab-managers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">other labs have better options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014better for their workflow and, often, better for the earth. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These last 22-years have been the driest since the year 800, according to a new study.
