{"id":739,"date":"2016-06-08T07:33:20","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T07:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/priorclavena.com\/?p=739"},"modified":"2020-01-30T22:14:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T22:14:27","slug":"food-truck-food-safety-road-redemption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.priorclave.com\/en-us\/2016\/06\/08\/food-truck-food-safety-road-redemption\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Truck Food Safety: On the Road to Redemption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Can you trust the nosh you buy from food trucks?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Once known as \u201croach coaches,\u201d the twenty-first century marks a new era for food trucks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But have they shed their bad reputation faster than their bad habits?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Customers are flocking to food trucks, many of which embrace a notoriously haute cuisine menu in a remarkably small footprint. The same GPS tracking that makes it possible for hipsters to find their favorite mobile delicacies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/2016\/04\/food-trucks-driving-away-from-roach-coach-food-safety-rep\/#.VxV--xIrK9s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also helps health officers track the location of food trucks so they can perform inspections,<\/a>\u00a0with encouraging results:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A report from the Institute of Justice found that <a href=\"http:\/\/ij.org\/press-release\/myth-busted-boston-food-trucks-and-food-carts-are-safer-than-restaurants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">food safety violations in Boston food trucks are on par with Boston restaurants.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But another study of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/ehs\/docs\/jeh\/2014\/april-food-trucks.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">food truck food safety released by the California Environmental Health Specialist Network was less glowing.<\/a>\u00a0EHS-Net (part of the CDC) argues that food truck inspection still has a way to go.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The report found that annual inspections were often scheduled and conducted during off hours when the trucks were not being used to prepare food &#8212;\u00a0differing from traditional inspections, which occur during normal business hours in order to better assess daily food handling practices. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/2015\/05\/food-safety-on-food-trucks-a-little-more-of-a-challenge\/#.V0CGgBUrJXg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Many trucks inspected during operation where found to have critical violations, including lack of hand-washing and refrigerators running too warm.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The gaps exposed by the California EHS-Net report need to be closed before we learn the hard way why we must have surprise health inspections where food is prepared and served.
