Big time.\u00a0 And a quality control department with two techs and a decent tabletop sterilizer could have prevented it all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2015-chipotle-food-safety-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Between August and December 2015, almost 500 across the U.S. people became ill from three different pathogens \u2014 E. coli, Salmonella, and norovirus \u2014 after eating at Chipotle locations.<\/a>\u00a0The company is getting a harsh lesson in food safety <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/moneybox\/2016\/01\/06\/chipotle_s_sales_are_tanking_because_of_e_coli.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as December 2015 sales dropped 30%.<\/a>\u00a0The pressure is on for small farms supplying local Chipotle restaurants, but the geographic spread of those sickened by E. coli and Salmonella seem to indicate the source was a national supplier, where food is prepared (and tested) before being sent to the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntegrity\u201d isn\u2019t enough to protect people from microbes, but food safety protocols and testing are. The USDA needs better oversight of suppliers and restaurants.
