A few minutes of googling can save you a long, dark night (try searching \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&amp;ion=1&amp;espv=2&amp;ie=UTF-8#q=restaurant%20inspection%20reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">restaurant inspection reports<\/a>\u201d and the name of your county).<\/p>\n<p>As just one example, Oregon\u2019s food safety inspection backlog is getting bigger every month, leaving the public vulnerable to a industry that is not known for great self-regulation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/2016\/11\/audit-oregon-struggling-with-food-safety-inspection-backlog\/#.WDM8UaIrLxQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The number of restaurants and food vendors is climbing steadily in Oregon\u2014faster than the number of food safety inspectors and labs, resulting in a backlog of over 2,800 establishments that are 3-4 months overdue for a visit.<\/a>\u00a0Similar inspector shortages are playing out in <a href=\"http:\/\/sf.eater.com\/2016\/2\/15\/11004986\/san-francisco-health-department-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Francisco<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalnow.com\/news\/local\/forsyth-county-has-backlog-of-overdue-restaurant-inspections\/article_47e29163-4928-58fb-9499-99fd477e57dd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkshireeagle.com\/stories\/north-adams-restaurant-closure-reveals-backlog-in-city-inspections,187169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Massachusetts<\/a>. When was the last time you checked up on restaurant inspections in your area? When was the last time the inspectors made their way through that all-you-can-eat buffet your kids love?<\/p>\n<p>Before we get excited about more taco trucks, we need to invest in more food safety inspectors to relieve the load and improve public health outcomes. More inspectors likely means outfitting more labs to keep up with testing.
