Protecting the Food Supply From Parasites and Other Pathogens

The biggest public health story of the summer started with salad.

Summer is typically the perfect time to enjoy fresh produce. However, the summer of 2026 tossed that concept out the window, as hundreds of thousands of people eschewed fresh, packaged salad greens for fear of contracting cyclosporiasis—a parasitic gastrointestinal infection caused by eating food or drink that is contaminated with human feces.

That aversion is understandable, because the effects of the infection are pretty miserable, and can last up to a month:

  • persistent, watery diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • weight loss
  • abdominal pain
  • nausea

Tens of thousands of people nationwide were stricken with the infection, with the largest number of cases popping up in Michigan. The cyclosporiasis outbreak reminded us that growing conditions and packaging processes leave fresh foods vulnerable to serious contamination, and that the “triple-washed” claim on many packaged greens is essentially meaningless when it comes to food safety. (Wondering how it is that poor growing practices in a few farms in Mexico led to more than 11,000 people falling ill across 20 states? Check out this recent Planet Money episode on the evolution of North American agribusiness and distribution, “Big Lettuce meets Small Intestine.”)

Testing and Quality Assurance: Priorclave Can Help

Cyclospora are not the only disease-causing bacteria to invade our food supply. In 2024, dozens of listeria infection cases popped up, and the outbreak was traced back to a deli meat processing plant in Virginia. In 2021, a multistate E. coli infection outbreak was attributed to packaged baby spinach from three farms in two U.S. states.

This is by no means a problem unique to North America: in late August the UK found itself in the midst of a growing salmonella outbreak that’s sickened nearly 500 people. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, these cases appear to be tied to a year-long multi-country outbreak in the EU.

Fortunately, researchers continue to work to find new easy to track down—and ideally prevent—the conditions that make contamination possible long before products ever make it to your local grocery store or restaurant kitchen.

Priorclave is pleased to support proactive food safety and quality assurance at both the producer and processor levels. To protect food and beverage safety, Priorclave has worked closely with breweries, dairies, and companies like Nestlé and Pilgrim’s Pride. Our autoclaves support lab work to ensure adherence to sanitation standards throughout the harvest-to-table process.

Obviously, the trip from field to factory to market must be quick, which means QA lab conditions and equipment must be ready to go. Priorclave’s research-grade tabletop autoclaves have a long track record of flexibility, efficiency, and reliability, even under heavy usage. Our autoclaves can handle loads of growth media, labwork, glassware and lab supplies, and waste—all while operating with energy-sipping efficiency.

Work With Priorclave to Protect Food Safety

The stakes are high when public health is at risk. And your resources are precious. Understandably, you expect the highest-quality equipment for your time and money. Priorclave’s non-jacketed laboratory-grade autoclaves come at a fraction of the purchase and maintenance costs of the jacketed medical-grade autoclaves many organizations use today. Your research needs might be quite different from medical or clinical needs; why pay for features you don’t need and could compromise reliability down the road? Our customer satisfaction ratings range from 93% to 100%, and that rating only improves the longer they have owned their Priorclave unit. In addition, Priorclave North America is pleased to offer free lifetime technical support and consultation and one of the best warranty programs for autoclaves in the food industry.
